Growing up, I inundated myself with movies relating to time travel. The paradoxes they created and explored were fascinating. The way they handled the changes in time were brilliant. Dimensions were transcended, worlds reformed, and history altered altogether. I can’t fathom the number of times I’ve longed to go Back to the Future with Doc Brown and Marty McFly. Try as I might, though, the only Flux Capacitors I could find on eBay are mostly decorative and poorly functional. I learned more history from Bill and Ted’s marvelous misadventures than I ever did in history class. I have many of my own theories and interpretations on time travel and its infinite possibilities which I would love for you to take the time to read.
Time travel is a widely discredited theory by the public because of its vague interpretation. Although I credit movies for inspiring the study of such sciences, it is also to blame for integrating poorly construed ideals into a Newtonian constructed society. In the scientific community, there is quite a discrepancy on the matter. Although many people believe in the possibility of using small particles to transcend time or space, it is often thought to be an impossibility because of the unthinkable amount of mass that it would require. Many also believe that if a time traveler was able to project his or her self into the future, it would be impossible for them to come back and tell anyone. I am a firm believer that time is ready to be manipulated, although not so much in the traditional sense of the idea. Before we go into much detail, please take the time to watch this video. It is a very basic introduction to the standing beliefs regarding our many dimensions. The first few dimensions are quite easy to understand, but soon grow out of our immediate comprehension. This animation illustrates the concepts presented in chapter one of the book "Imagining the Tenth Dimension" by Rob Bryanton. I highly recommend that everyone go to his website and if you have the money, buy his book. It is a fascinating read. Understanding the many dimensions is critical as it serves as a foundation for nearly all timeline alteration theories. Consider the paradox of going back in time to kill your own grandfather. Upon doing so, you would eliminate your own existence and ability to go back in time--resulting in a space-time continuum error, with no logical outcome in mind. Theoretically, this could instantaneously end the universe as we know it. Instead, many believe in several interrelated dimensions. Any minor action can then create a separate universe should a different action be initiated instead. That being considered, should you go back in time and kill your own grandfather, nothing would alter in your dimension. On a separate timeline, you would never be born. However your timeline is already established an unable to be altered, allowing you to do as you please in the past, present, or future. Many people argue this saying that if you went back in time with every intent on killing your grandfather, you would strictly be unable to do so. The universe would work against you, preventing your attempts no matter how earnestly you try. This is too science fictional for me to believe, though it is quite interesting to consider. Many of the depictions of time travel in movies involve large, flamboyant machines used to transmit human beings to specifically dictated points in time. This is not, however, coherent with the most widely held beliefs on the matter. Instead, interdimentional travel is a much more believable scenario. Take for instance the latest news regarding the Hadron collider. Two of the world's leading theoretical physicists have proposed the possibility that the malfunctions preventing the successful run of the collider could be the result of its own sabotage. These scientists--who are two of the most brilliant minds in the world today--suggest that the particle created is so abhorrent to its own nature that it goes back in time to prevent its own creation. This scenario is incredibly similar to the above time traveler who kills his own grandfather. Perhaps we are living in the dimension that stems off from our original course? To fully understand this proposal, you must familiarize yourself a bit with particle awareness, and take a two minute crash course in subatomic physics. The video to the right is a bit elementary, but is the best I've seen at explaining the basics of these concepts remarkably well. Through some process that scientists don't even begin to pretend to understand, observing subatomic particles alters their behavior. In this experiment, an observed particle will pass through one slit, even if you observe it AFTER it has passed through the slit. However if you do not observe the particle, it seemingly passes through BOTH slits at the same time. This is a preposterous idea, but through countless experiments, the results remain the same. There are many scientists working very diligently towards the goal of understanding the manipulation of time. Ronald Mallett predicts that he can prove time travel's existence within our own decade! Others, such as Michio Kaku who can be seen in the accompanying video, not only view time travel as a possibility, but an inevitability. You heard from Dr. Kaku earlier in this post in the introductory paragraph. His views on time travel are truly remarkable and lead the field of study. Before you write him off as a kook, keep in mind that he is the co-founder of string field theory. I highly recommend reading his (Internationally Best Selling) books for a much greater understanding of this subject matter. He writes on a number of other topics which all delve into the unknown, from wormholes to black holes to artificial intelligence and even quantum computing. Thinking back to the video above regarding dimensions, you can now begin to understand Kaku's train of thought. Instead of time being an intangible entity, it is instead something that we do not have the ability to grasp because we are like flatlanders walking around on a newspaper. To us, it is incomprehensible to travel from one point to another without covering all of the space in between. But, much like folding the newspaper, should you manipulate the higher dimension, we would be quite able to travel instantaneously to any point on a physical, plane of time. You will notice that many of these scientists pawn the idea off as possible on a subatomic level. The physics on this level is much less contingent than on the level we are used to. As seen in the double slit experiment, they appear to be able to metamorphose instantly between particle and wave and back again. They also seem able to pop in and out of our dimension at what seems to be free will. Could these particles have free will? It seems as though we have a lot to learn from these tiny particles. -The Faint
Rather than a continuous string extending forever onward into the future--and, juxtapose, forever into the past--time could be thought of as a continuous series of independent moments. Instead of being forever locked in place--which they very well may be--they could easily be thought of as mobile portions of time as a whole.
Where, then, do we reside? It is comforting to believe in a destiny or planned path that puts us where we are 'supposed' to be. However, now with this knowledge and considering probability, that is statistically inaccurate. Moreover, through the result of our own--or more likely others'--actions, we have meandered through a severe trajectory of webbing sending us through an inconceivably large amount of paths of time planes. I believe that with every chance occurance or choice made by anyone we are traversed into a new dimension. Even so, there are more dimensions outside of these few which we have just begun to understand. Of course, these ideas are merely theoretical, but it is exciting to imagine that we could someday explore these dimensions freely. We have already begun to do so with our own minds, so the logical next step would be to externally free our minds to explore them. We are already seeing the probability that subatomic particles are traveling between dimensions. We are on the brink of controlling this and possibly understanding their ventures. What, then, might the next step be? Perhaps instead of trying to build machines to send our physical bodies between dimensions, we could force our own consciousness to transcend the dimensional barriers along with the tiny particles so that we could explore the dimensions mentally. Perhaps we can send our own consciousness to ourselves at another point in time, or perhaps another dimension? This is no more outrageous a theory than those proposed in Donnie Darko. ![]() The dimensions surrounding us are likely oriented to those most similar to our own. However, how can we be sure they even exist? There have to be some scenarios that are just utterly unreachable. If that is the case, does a dimension exist for every possible contingency or our paths? These are the questions that result in the higher dimensions in the video above. Each possibility results in a new level of total possibility. The ghosts of possibility are often thought to be lost should you make other decisions. However, as demonstrated by the ideas of the Hadron collider sabotaging itself, there may be evidence of other dimensions existing and in turn influencing and shaping our own. If small particles hold this power, why shouldn't we have the same? Basically, I believe that every choice we make deviates our path into a different dimension than the one we would reside in should we be devoid of choice. Every choice strays our path, and alters our reality. The question is, are the other dimensions that our choices avoid still out there, or do they become instantiated once we live them? We are all travelers of time. We are all moving into the future one second at a time. The trick is to reverse this process, freeze it, or even accelerate into the future. That can't be too difficult. Clearly, most of my views on time travel are heavily influenced by science fiction and fantasy. I have not formally studied any of these sciences, nor have I devoted a large portion of my life to it.
I do have an interest in the subject matter, and read what I can--which is all I intend for you to take from this article. In fact, I don't fully believe all of the ideas I have on the matter myself! Don't let my opinions influence your own; but please do your own research and formulate your own ideas. Once you do, please share them with me! If you would like, I can even publish them and link them below. In most movies, the discovery of time travel begins with just one man's ideas. You never know; perhaps some day you will slip and hit your head on a sink and develop a Flux Capacitor! Every dimension should thereupon branch into its own alternate dimensions, which extend from each individual dimension independently.
